Lachlan

I waited until dark before I shifted to my dragon and soared over the treetops. I agreed with Indy when she said she thought the mountain lion shifters had been camping at my old place.

Why the hell would they be here?

I should’ve cleaned up that mess long ago. I should’ve lit another match and burned the rest of it to the ground. But it had served as a reminder. A monument to why I needed to do better and be better.

I peered through the treetops, flying low to see and smell better. Earlier, I had found tracks from one of them. They’d been big cat prints, and I followed them for miles.

A crumpled carcass caught my eye. I dipped between an opening between some trees and landed, folding my wings before a branch tore at the sensitive webbing.

Backtracking to the animal remains, I sniffed. It wasn’t fresh, but it’d been killed earlier today and only half had been eaten. The stench of male mountain lion shifter surrounded the spot.

I was miles from the path Indy had been on, but shifters had excellent hearing. Had she interrupted the meal? Had the second shifter heard her and let out a scream to notify this one?

I wanted to know what was going on.

I wasn’t getting any answers tonight.

I was supposed to be with my mate. We’d be done with dinner by now, possibly even naked. Instead, I was in my dragon form, hunting something I couldn’t explain.

Why were they hanging out at my old home? The property still belonged to me, and I’d done little with it other than try to forget what went on. My parents’ legacy had been strong enough to keep others away. And now, strange mountain lion shifters were hanging around, and my mate decided to take a leisurely walk here.

I should’ve torched the entire place when I had the chance. It wouldn’t have looked suspicious then. Today was a different story. It would be obvious to others I had something to hide.

A low growl vibrated my chest. What the hell did those shifters want?

I watched through the canopy of the trees and flew toward Indy’s parents’ cabin, where I had parked my pickup. Once I received Indy’s text, I abandoned my work and broke every traffic law possible to get here. My discarded shirt still lay on the passenger side of the pickup. Indy must’ve folded up my jeans and put them on the driver’s seat, also shutting the door for me.

Warmth bloomed in my chest.

Was she still at her parents’ place? I hadn’t seen Paul or Janet in months. I hadn’t really talked to them in a couple of years. There was no animosity between us, but I hadn’t fostered a relationship. They had seemed nice enough. The type of couple to take any of their children’s significant others under their figurative wings. I hadn’t really included myself in that category since Indy hadn’t had much of a choice but to be with me.

I dressed and climbed behind the wheel.
